The Foundation of Love
At the end of Luke 7 a woman, known to be a sinner, comes to Christ and washed the feet of the Savior with her tears and wiped his feet with her hair and oils. As this scene is taking place the savior perceives what is being said about her and turns to Simon, "I have something to say to [you],"
Can you imagine putting yourself in Simon's shoes for just a moment? I personally would be anxious to hear what the lord wants to tell me. But Simon should know by now that the savior is always ready to teach and so he replies, "Master, Say on." (Luke 7:40)
As Christ gives his parable of the two debtors, the creditor 'frankly forgave them both,' (Luke 7:42) of there debts. Christ then asks which of the two loved the creditor more. Simon's reply was the one who was forgiven more. Of course if you have more to loose or more that needs to be forgiven, how much would you love the savior if he just frankly forgave?
This woman came to her creditor, her creator, her savior, and gave of her self to the master, washing his feet with her hair and tears. She has brought her self so low and so humbly before the savior and he knows it. He the savior knows how painful it must be to open herself up in this manner.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
Can you imagine the peace that would come behind those words? Can you imagine your faith being strong enough to allow humility to work with in you and so you may partake of his forgiveness?
Jesus Christ is truly merciful, not for this miracle alone, (because being forgiven of all is truly a miracle) but for the many times those with incredible faith came to him and with the desires to be healed. He is the master healer, and he loves us all. He came not to call the righteous the but the sinners to repentance.
Some one once told me that the foundation of love is knowledge. The reason why we love anything is because we know things about them, even if that piece of information is only a sliver of what really there is to know. You love your friends, family, pets because of the simple details you know about them. I feel like love can be a power that we haven't really yet realized.
Take the savior, loved us because he knew who we were before this life. And then he performed the atonement. He had to experience every piece of information that makes up you and me. If the foundation of love is knowledge and Christ, like God, are all knowing, does that not put into perspective of how much they truly love us?
What does it mean to love our selves? To love God? To love ourselves enough to turn to God? Maybe we don't understand ourselves or love ourselves so we love God so we can love ourselves.
The foundation of our salvation is that we are loved by the supreme creator and his son Jesus Christ.
